SHORT STORY: MY RELATIONSHIP WITH A HOUSE RAT by Ahmed Idris

I once lived with a rat at my house. Unlike normal rats, this one was different. He never entered the room or any where human activity takes place. He lived in a hole in the compound, and only comes out at night when it is quiet and everyone is asleep. This is the time he uses to fend for himself.

While living with this rat, I came to respect and appreciate his thinking. As I have come to observe during his 28 months presence in our home. He always does his best to keep out of our business. Many of my family members never knew we shared a house with him. If I was not a night crawler, I would not know myself. Mr. Rat as I now address him has been a good guest I will always hope for.

On one faithful night, I had an encounter with Mr. Rat that will forever shape the way I view relationships with humans. I was looking for something in the compound when suddenly he came out his home only to see me staring at him. I made no attempt move, I just kept looking. He was composed and seemed in no hurry for the night’s activity. His whiskers were dancing to the gentle night breeze and his eyeballs were sparkling from the ray of moonlight. To my uttermost amazement, Mr. Rat looked at me as if to say “oh, bro so it’s you?” and shook his tail while quietly going about his duty. I was perplexed.

I went back to my room wondering if I was hallucinating. I sat on my bed thinking, if only people were like Mr. Rat. Life would have been less complicated. Unfortunately, people are not like that, they will intrude and impose their presence in your life. They will try by all means to involve themselves in your personal affairs. I believe if people cannot look at your life and put in a positive contribution, they should just look away and face their own troubles.  Many years have passed since Mr. Rat left, yet I still yearn for a company like him.

A MOMENT OF ESCTACY: SHORT STORY BY AHMED IDRIS

“How are you Usman”,? I said in Hausa to the man selling fruits. “I’m fine”, he replied in the same language. I was about to pick an orange when a little sweet voice interrupted. “Aboki, how much for apple”? The voice said in a slow soft tone. I turned around to see the reason why i was so calm; i was stunned to see the creature standing behind me. A young lady of about 22, she wore a blue gown that matches her charming moccasin shoes. Without been told, you know she doesn’t plan on staying long outside. I was about to make a comment, but I stopped not knowing why. “There is something about this girl” I told myself. “When did I suddenly become dumb”, I asked.  “Maybe I am just over reacting” I resolved. The girl was a rare breed; she had glittering eyes that stimulates charm and charisma. She had an Aura of mystery which took my soul on a journey of uncertainty. With a hairstyle that matches her skin colour and height, she was an image and symbol of true African beauty.

As an on-looker I was eager to change the present state of things. Luckily, the fruit seller was having problem communicating with her. I jumped on the opportunity to declare my presence. “He said the green apples are for N80 while the red ones are for N150 each”, I chipped in.  A sign of relief was visible on her radiant face. “Please tell him I need only two red apples, will he sell both for N250”, she said. I told the fruit seller and he agreed, but I was determined to associate with this lady and as a typical Nigerian guy who wants to get acquainted to a lady with such exuberance.  I told her the man refuse, but she shouldn’t worry because I have taken care of it. She objected at first, but after so much persuasion she agreed. I selected good ones from the fruits and put them into a nylon bag. Volunteering to walk her home, I held the bag as we started a journey into the world of our individual personalities.

I have never been so anxious like this moment. My thoughts were at war on what to say, and as we journeyed my heartbeat doubled. Although I was trembling inside, I maintained calmness and was unruffled physically. As we chatted, I was composed and we continued exploring each other’s history and genealogy and genetics. I discovered that she was quiet a talker. I think behind every lady’s wall is woman full with energy, grace and love. The only problem is the door rarely opens. Anyway, Maryam as I came to know her by name was one of a kind. It felt as if we’ve known each other since childhood. I still wonder why she talked to me the way she did on our first day of acquaintance.  We reached her house and stopped at the entrance to continue our discussion. We treated a lot of topics like education, literature and technology. We also ventured into politics and government, and Dollar and the state of economy. I began to see a future with Maryam, fantasizing how we are going to build our relationship. Daydreaming about a life with this fine young woman. I was so excited and thanked God for meeting a lady with such excellent character and superb appearance. “It was my lucky day”, I told myself.

We exchanged phone numbers and just as we were about to part ways, she dropped it. It was like a nuclear bomb on my heart. I was dumbfounded when she said it. “By the way, I am honored to invite you to my engagement ceremony tomorrow by noon. Not many people will attend but I think a new friend like you will add to my day”. These words shook me like an earthquake of the highest magnitude.  I was both stunned and startled and could not reply, I nodded while trying to fake a smile. She gave me a look that seems to say “I know how feel but I can’t help you, I’m sorry” . She smiled and thanked me for accepting while waving me goodbye, she went into her house. I turned around to leave, but my thoughts and emotions were in conflict.  My legs couldn’t carry me and I was struggling to concentrate. I turned again and I saw her standing by the gate of her house. She smiled and waved to me. I looked away started walking towards my house.

Maryam; I thought I had found a jewel. Alas, but she made my day and also ruined it. All this time I thought I have found my light, but I was wrong. I suspended all activities for the day and tried to console myself by going to bed early. The next day was like a breath of fresh air, as all the emotions I had the previous day was gone. I sat on my bed reminiscing about the encounter, and I was happy to realize that it was just a moment of ecstasy.

AREWA GIRLS NOW AND BEFORE, THE BITTER TRUTH
At 24 I have been in a real relationship thrice.  One was serious and the others were a waste of time. My cry is not about the relationship I had, it’s about the ones I didn’t have simply because my Arewa girls would not give it a chance. While growing up our parents (Fathers) used to tell us interesting stories of how they married our mothers. Ever since I was a kid, my dream was to get a good girl who is educated enough to take care of me and my kids. Alas, my dream is yet to materialize. Today’s girls are completely different from yesterdays. Are our parents (Mothers) to blame or the society? That’s a question I’ve been burning to get an answer.

No generation has witness the birth of beautiful young women like ours. Even with all the heavy make-ups in the market. One cannot deny that the beautiful ones have already been born. Unfortunately, beauty without a good heart is a waste of cosmetics. Our parents (Mothers) were not too pretty, but they got husbands and married at the right time. They didn’t give our Daddies hard time, they simply gave them their hearts and today we are witnessing the last age of real love. I say this because after their generation, there will be nothing like love. Lust will take over. My Arewa girls have made love so expensive, it’s now sold to the highest bidder.

Pride; Show me one Arewa girl who is not prideful and I will run a marathon from Kano to Lagos. If a mountain will increase each time a girl’s pride rises, I guess Mars will now be our home. The other day I was at Shoprite with a friend. While we were walking by some girls who were taking pictures and selfies. My friend volunteered to take them a shot or two so they could have a different angular view.  Just when he declared his intention to them, my Arewa girls pretended as if their ears where not functional. He withdrew to me and we left. My friend who has a good heart felt the girls needed help and will be better if they had their pictures taken from a different direction. However, his intention was perceived and translated otherwise. Instead of them to politely decline, their pride made them behave like those creatures in the Zoo.  Love is a barter of deep sense of feeling and an ocean of emotions not a battle ground for pride.

In the olden days, women see fashion as priority only after the issues at home have been sorted out. Well, today it’s a different story entirely. Last week a woman sold the foodstuffs in her house to buy clothes for her friend’s wedding. It doesn’t matter how or where the finances come from, what matters is they must put on the latest designers and accessories. If their boyfriends or husbands cannot afford it, they solicit other means to fill their obsession. This alone is a criteria for giving you their time or affection. If you can’t provide for them, then start learning how to continue living a bachelor’s life. As for the woman who sold her foodstuffs, she slept in a police cell. I can’t blame the husband.

I once told a friend that I will marry a girl who had just completed her secondary school. After we’ve gotten a kid or two, I will allow her to further her education. A lot of people view my opinion as bizarre while to many others is a welcome idea. They say educate a man and you educate an individual, but educate a woman and you educate a community. I believe this saying works in the past. If education will become the reason why a girl will disregard totally what the society holds in high regards, I think then that she shouldn’t get that education. Our so called educated girls no longer have respect for values that are of importance to the growth and stability of the society. The education they seek have given them so much exposure and enlightenment far beyond what they need. They no longer care about morals of dressing and respect and values of womanhood and chastity. They have lost what it means to be a woman of dignity, a symbol of peace and tranquility.

Nothing breaks my heart than the way contemporary Arewa girls behave in relationships. You can hardly find a guy who is happy with his courtship with Arewa girls. The kind of pain and agony we suffer from them are rarely been experienced by my comrades on the other side of the map. Where have we (Guys) gone wrong? I don’t seem to know. When you date an Arewa girl, you must be mete with any of the following treatment, neglect, disdain, disregard, disrespect and many irrational reactions. To them it is a test of love and loyalty.  Even the Nigerian Army doesn’t treat new recruits the way Arewa girls treat guys. This may probably be the reason why some of us misbehave. We are been subjected to harsh emotional conditions so we find solace elsewhere. Sometimes in many places at the same time. I personally believe that if love is what it is, it cannot be shared amongst persons, but only to one who truly deserves it.

I like my Arewa girls, but it’s the traits they exhibit that discourage me. I know all of you cannot change at once. However, I am sincerely calling on any of you who read this article to start by assessing yourself and proceed to restructuring how you deal with my kind. We are pillars on which you must stand, why break us when you can make us stand stronger. To love a thing and find it wanting in loyalty and respect is misappropriation of faith. Don’t you think?

INTRODUCTION TO BLOGGING PART 3 THE NORTHERNER NIGERIA
Using copyrighted material
As you learned earlier, you generally need to license copyrighted material in order to use it, which often costs money. The exception to this is a rule called Fair Use. Fair Use means you can use copyrighted material without a license only for certain purposes. These include:
  • Commentary
  • Criticism
  • Reporting
  • Teaching
For example, you can't just grab a copyrighted photo and use it on your blog because you think it's pretty. However, it probably would be considered Fair Use if you included that photo in a blog post that commented on and analyzed a photographer's work.
Guidelines for Fair Use
  • A majority of the content you post must be your own.
To return to the example above, it's probably Fair Use to include a few relevant photos in a long post. However, using those same photos in a post with only a few lines of commentary might not be Fair Use. For another example, let's imagine you found a useful tutorial you wanted to feature on your blog. Including one tip from the tutorial would be Fair Use. Including the entire tutorial would not be Fair Use, even if you linked to the original source.
  • Give credit to the copyright holder.
In order for something to be Fair Use, you must give full credit to the person who created it. This includes the creator's name, as well as other information that will help people find the original work or source. For example, if you're posting and commenting on an image that was published on a newspaper's website, you should include a link to the original story.
  • Don't make money off of the copyrighted work.
In general, it's much easier to claim Fair Use when you're using the copyrighted material for noncommercial purposes. While posting images of your favorite TV shows and adding funny captions and commentary might be considered Fair Use, selling those images on T-shirts would not. Making money from ads on your blog can also limit your ability to claim Fair Use.
Misusing copyrighted material
Keep in mind that even if you post content in good faith, the copyright holder may not agree that it's Fair Use. If someone requests that you remove their work from your blog, you should do so immediately. Otherwise, you can suffer serious consequences:
  • The copyright holder may complain to your blog service and have your blog shut down.
  • The copyright holder may sue you.

Licensing copyrighted content

If you want to use copyrighted content in a way that doesn't fall under Fair Use, you'll have to license it in order to get permission to post it. If you're interested in purchasing the rights to use images, video, and other media on your blog, you may want to visit a few of the following Stock Photo sites:
Photostock.com
Istockphoto.com
Photolia.com
Fotolia.com

Sharing copyrighted videos

Video-sharing sites like YouTube and Vimeo offer the option to post videos to your blog by embedding them. When you embed a video, it automatically creates a link back to the place where it was originally posted. Because the original creator or poster is automatically credited, you don't have to worry about going through any extra steps to give credit.
Be aware that many videos on these sites—particularly videos of TV shows and movies—are in violation of copyright law and may be removed from YouTube at any time. If a video you've embedded is removed from YouTube, it will also be removed from your blog. You should never embed a video that you know is breaking copyright laws.

Protecting your intellectual property

Copyright protects the things you create too. You own the original content you post on your blog. If people copy or steal your intellectual property, you have the right to try to stop them.

Guarding your content

The best way to protect your content is to watermark it or keep an eye out for it elsewhere.

What to do if you find your content on another site

There are two things you can do if you find your images, text, or other media on another website or blog. First, contact the person who runs the blog or site that took your content. Most blogs list a contact email address, but if you can't find one you can always leave a comment on the offending post. Ask them firmly but politely to remove your content (or give you credit, if you don't mind sharing it). This can work, especially in cases where the other person didn't realize any wrongdoing had occurred.
If contacting the blogger doesn't work, you may want to file a DMCA takedown request. DMCA refers to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, a law designed to help copyright holders protect their content. Under this law, if a site steals your original content you can complain to that site's service provider. If the service provider finds your complaint valid, it will take down the content.

INTRODUCTION TO BLOGGING PART 2 the northerner
 Copyright
As you write blog posts, you may find that you want to include images you find online. Or maybe you found a great piece of writing—a recipe, a story, or a review—that you want to highlight on your own blog. It's important to know that almost all of the content you find on the Web belongs to someone. Just because you can take images, text, and more from other sites doesn't mean it is right to do so—ethically or legally.

Understanding Copyright

Copyright is the legal concept that works, art, writing, images, music, and more belongs to the people who create them. According to copyright law, any original content you create and record in a lasting form is your own intellectual property. This means other people can't legally copy your work and pretend it's their own. They can't make money from the things you create either.
To use, copy, or change a copyrighted work, you need permission from the person who holds the copyright. This permission is called a license. Even though everyone has the right to require that others respect their copyright and ask permission to use their work, some people and organizations choose to license their content more freely. They do this by giving their work a Creative Commons license or by placing their work in the Public Domain.
Review the infographic to get an overview of the differences between traditional copyright, Creative Commons, and Public Domain.

Using Public Domain and Creative Commons content

If you don't want to spend money on the images and content you use for your blog, you may want to use Public Domain and Creative Commons-licensed content.

Using Public Domain content

There are no restrictions on using works that are in the Public Domain, which means you can use them however you want except for claiming you created them. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to tell whether or not something is in the Public Domain.

Using Creative Commons content

Although Creative Commons content won't cost you any money to use, it's not totally free; to use it, you must follow certain rules. People who choose to make their content Creative Commons can choose one or more of these licenses to apply to their work:
  • Attribution: You must credit the creator in order to use, copy, or share the content.
  • Non Commercial: You can't make a profit from the content.
  • No Derivative Works: You can't change the content.
  • Share Alike: You can change the content, but you have to let other people use your new work with the same license as the original. In other words, you can't treat any Share Alike work you adapt as your own copyright, even if you radically change it.
