ABUBAKAR IBRAHIM WINS $100,000 IN LITERATURE COMPETITION

Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s Season of Crimson Blossom won the grand prize of $100,000 today Wednesday 12 October 2016 at a World Pres Conference held in Lagos.


The winner of the 2016 NLNG Prize for Literature has been announced. Abubakar Adam Ibrahim was named the winner of this year's competition. Abubakar Adam Ibrahim’s Season of Crimson Blossom won the grand prize of $100,000 today Wednesday 12 October 2016 at a World Pres Conference held in Lagos.

The announcement was made by the advisory board chaired by Professor Emeritus Ayo Banjo  who described A Season of Crimson Blossoms as “as skillful and sympathetic narrative.” Abubakar beat off competition from Cassava Republic stable mate, Elnathan John and past winner Chika Unigwe.

All three are alumni of the Civitella Ranieri writing fellowship in Italy. Abubakar Ibrahim Adam was born in Jos, Nigeria. Season of Crimson Blossom, his first novel was published by Cassava Republic in Lagos. The story is set in conservative northern Nigeria, between a 55-year-old widow, Binta and 25-year-old ‘area-boy’ Reza, their lives become intertwined when Reza tries to rob Binta. It is a story of love, political violence, class, and religion.
